Call for Papers: “Beyond Pavlov: Understandings of Psychological Distress in Eastern Europe”

Dear H-Madness readers,

We are pleased to share a Call for Papers for the international symposium “Beyond Pavlov: Understandings of Psychological Distress in Eastern Europe”, to be held at the University of Warwick (UK) on 13–14 May 2027.

The symposium explores the plurality of approaches to psychological distress in the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, examining how psy-experts challenged, revised, or expanded Pavlovian paradigms. Topics include institutional practices, experiences of distress, alternative approaches to trauma, transnational networks, and cultural representations of Pavlov’s theories.

The confirmed keynote speaker is Benjamin Zajicek (Towson University).

Please send a paper title, a 300-word abstract, and a brief academic biography (200 words) to anna.toropova.1@warwick.ac.uk. Limited funding is available to assist presenters with travel and accommodation costs, with priority given to PhD students, early career scholars, and those from institutions without research funds. Please indicate in your proposal whether you require financial assistance.

Submission deadline: 1 January 2027.

See the attached Call for Papers for further information and practical details.
