The Sigmund Freud Museum has a library on psychoanalysis that might be of interest to H-Madness readers. Below you find all the necessary information about the content of the archive and how to consult it.
Library of Psychoanalysis
With around 40,000 media, the Sigmund Freud Museum’s Library of Psychoanalysis is Europe’s largest special library devoted to psychoanalysis. Together with the Abraham A. Brill Library of the New York Psychoanalytic Society & Institute it ranks among the world’s most important libraries with an emphasis on psychoanalysis. Its foundation goes back to Anna Freud: her wish was to furnish the Sigmund Freud Museum at Berggasse 19 with a library and thus to establish the Museum as a centre of scientific research – a “living image of current psychoanalysis”.
Holdings
The Library of Psychoanalysis is highly specialised: The focus of its collecting activities is on a current examination and development of psychoanalytic theory and practice along with interdisciplinary research strategies from the fields of philosophy, social science, gender studies, neuroscience, art, etc. The Library also boasts a collection of specialist psychoanalytic periodicals unique anywhere in Europe: along with current journals, the collection also includes original issues of almost all psychoanalytic journals published prior to 1945. The publications of the Internationaler Psychoanalytischer Verlag (most first editions) and rarities such as early Japanese publications can be viewed in the Library.
Berggasse 19: cultural legacy and information pool
Housed in Sigmund Freud’s former living rooms, the Library plays an important part in preserving Freud’s cultural legacy by keeping, protecting and developing its holdings. At the same time, the Library of Psychoanalysis continues to write this history by constantly updating its collection, offering students, scientists and psychoanalysts from Austria and abroad an information pool of psychoanalytic knowledge production and a platform of interdisciplinary networking.
Open shelves and lending
The collected works of Sigmund Freud form the centrepiece of the reading room, available to an international audience in various languages. Psychoanalytic encyclopaedias and reference works facilitate scientific research. Our books are presented on open shelves arranged by content, with an option to research the entire holdings through our online catalogue. The public lending library is open to anyone interested and the holdings can be queried via the union catalogue of the Austrian Association of Libraries (Österreichischer Bibliothekenverbund) and Sigmund Freud Museum website (www.freud-museum.at).
