Research in psychiatric archives is a fascinating yet demanding adventure. Laure Murat proposes to retrace her own path through this maze, from her discovery in the early 2000s of the archives of Dr Blanche’s clinic—a private mental health institution first located in Montmartre and later in Passy (La Maison du docteur Blanche, Lattès, 2001, Goncourt Prize for Biography)—to her current work, including her research on the entanglements of madness and politics (L’Homme qui se prenait pour Napoléon. Pour une histoire politique de la folie, Gallimard, 2011, Femina Essay Prize). This trajectory consistently reflects the urgency of restoring language, and what it expresses, to the very heart of psychosis.
