Dear Hmadness readers,
Those interested in the history of psychiatry and childhood may wish to explore a new online exhibition by historian Kira A. Smith, Childhood Madness: Compassionate Portraits of Children in Canadian Insane Asylums, 1900–1930, which examines the experiences of children institutionalized in Canadian psychiatric asylums during the early twentieth century. Combining historical research, illustrated portraits, maps, timelines, and individual stories, the project seeks to foster a more compassionate understanding of childhood mental distress and institutionalization in the Canadian context. The exhibition is hosted by Madness Canada and is freely accessible online.
