Madness and Psychiatry During and After the Decolonization Wars (20th-21st Centuries)

We are happy to announce the organization of a symposium at Sciences Po, Campus de Paris, Tuesday, 11 April 2024. The day is organized by the Centre Marc Bloch (CMB) and the Centre d’histoire de Sciences Po (CHSP).

This symposium aims to bring together historians to explore the theme of madness and psychiatry during and after decolonization wars. Its ambition is to examine the specificity of decolonization wars in terms of mental health and assistance. What is the influence of such conflicts on the psyche of civilian and military populations? Do the forms of violence and configurations specific to decolonization wars generate specific psychological impacts? How is psychiatry transformed by the experience of decolonization wars? More generally, the symposium should allow for an examination, from the perspective of the psyche, of the violence inherent in transitions from colonial to post-colonial eras.

Cette journée d’études se propose de réunir des historiens et historiennes sur
le thème de la folie et de la psychiatrie pendant et après les guerres de
décolonisation. Son ambition est d’interroger la spécificité des guerres de
décolonisation en matière de santé et d’assistance mentale. Quelle est
l’influence de tels conflits sur le psychisme des populations civiles et
militaires ? Les formes de violences et les configurations propres aux guerres
de décolonisation génèrent-elles des atteintes psychiques spécifiques ?
Comment la psychiatrie est-elle transformée par l’expérience des guerres de
décolonisation ? Plus généralement, la journée devrait permettre d’interroger,
sous l’angle du psychisme, la violence des transitions du colonial au postcolonial.
