History of Psychiatry – CALL FOR SPECIAL ISSUES PROPOSALS

We are happy to share this call for special issues with h-madness readers.

The journal History of Psychiatry invites parties interested in coordinating a Special Issue to prepare and submit proposals by 28th November 2025 or at their earliest convenience. The Special Issues are slated for publication in late 2026 and 2027. Proposals should be no longer than 1,200 words and should generally align with the journal’s aims and scope.

 Proposals should include the following:

  • A statement about the rationale and topicality of the theme.
  • A description of the approach that team members envisage taking and the areas they wish to cover.
  • A list of prospective authors and a synopsis of their specific contributions.
  • A timetable outlining the steps involved in preparing the issue.

Those who submit successful proposals will act as Guest Editors. They will liaise with the authors and the journal’s Editor-in-Chief. As Guest Editors they will be responsible for:

  • Reviewing initial submissions.
  • Shepherding manuscripts received through the journal’s manuscript submission system.
  • Recruiting peer reviewers and ensuring that their assessments are submitted in a timely manner, and if necessary, recruiting alternate reviewers.
  • Making recommendations for a final decision based on the reviews.

All Special Issue articles will undergo full, independent peer review, in line with Sage’s policies. There is no guarantee of acceptance, even for invited papers. To ensure that individual contributions, as well as the overall collection, meet the journal’s standards, the journal’s Editor-in-Chief will have final say over the publication of any given manuscript.

Please refer to the History of Psychiatry Index of Special Issues to view past Special Issues published in the journal.

Any advance queries and all proposals should be sent to Eric J. Engstrom (engstroe@geschichte.hu-berlin.de).
